About Nakuru
Nakuru County is found in the former Rift Valley province. Ranked as county 032, Nakuru county is the fourth largest county in Kenya in terms of population after Nairobi, Kakamega and Kiambu. The name Nakuru comes from the Maasai language meaning "a dusty place" in reference to the whirlwinds that engulf the area with clouds of dust. The largest and capital of the county is Nakuru town followed by Naivasha.
Nakuru is located 165 kilometers from Nairobi and it's a major agricultural center due to its favorable weather and fertile soils. The major crops include maize, beans, and wheat. The sub-counties are seven in number and are Nakuru Town East, Nakuru Town West, Bahati, Rongai, Subukia, Kuresoi North, Kuresoi South, Gilgil, Naivasha, Njoro and Molo.

The population of the county according to the 2009 census is 1,603,325 people. The county is a cosmopolitan having its population made up of individuals from almost all tribes in Kenya. The dominant communities are the Kikuyu and the Kalenjin both of which make up 70% of the total population of the county.

The weather pattern of the county is rather predictable. The temperatures range between 10 degrees Celsius during the cold months (July and August) and 20 degrees Celsius during the hot months (January to March). The county receives rainfall between 700mm and 1200mm annually with an average of 800mm. The county has two rainy seasons April, May, and August (long rains) and October to December (short rains).

Lord Egerton Castle - There is rather a sad love story behind the building of the castle. Lord Maurice Egerton built the castle in 1952 hoping that the woman he had fallen in love with would agree to live with him in it. She, however, turned him down. This was after turning his first proposal where he had built a six bedroom house calling it a chicken coop. The castle is located about 12km from Nakuru town. It is surrounded by beautiful landscape with gardens all over it. Quite a sort after venue for weddings. This is definitely a place to visit when in the county.

Mount Longonot and Mount Longonot National Park - Mount Longonot is an extinct volcanic mountain whose last activity was in the 1800s. The park is within and around the mountain. There are a number of wildlife that inhabits the park both flora and fauna.

Crescent Island - Located on Lake Naivasha it's one of the unique places to visit within the county. The activities that one can engage within the island include taking a nature walk and experience the diverse wildlife within the island and have a picnic afterward.

Olkaria Hot Spa - It is situated adjacent to the Hell's Gate National Park. After a satisfying safari within the park, walk into the spa that has a naturally heated water that has been cooled to a temperature that is suitable for the human skin and sock yourself in it for a relaxed afternoon.

Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, and Lake Elementaita - These are the three major lakes in the county. Lake Nakuru is famous for a large number of flamingos that occupy its shores.L ake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru each have a National park around them with a variety of wildlife.
